Dr. Cantwell attended Duke Univeristy as an undergraduate and earned his medical degree from Northwestern University in Chicago, Ill. He served an internship at the University of Florida and residency at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. He completed fellowships in general cardiology at the University of California in San Diego, Ca. and at Emory University in Atlanta. From 1969-1971, Dr. Cantwell served with the U.S. Public Health Services as chief of medicine for the Atlanta Federal Penitentiary. Dr. Cantwell is the recipient of numerous honors and awards: Atlantic Coast Conference Honor Roll for Scholarship and Athletics (Basketball), Duke University (1960); Travel Fellowships: W.H.O, American College of Physicians, International Society of Cardiology; Consultants, President Council on Physical Fitness and Sports (1975-1989); Best Teacher in Internal Medicine-GBMC (1985). In 1996, Dr. Cantwell served as the Chief Medical Officer for the Olympic Games. In 2007, he received the Mayo Alumni Association's Professional Achievement Award for his accomplishments in teaching, medical practice and clinical research. In 2010, he was honored with a Mastership in the American College of Physicians. He has been a team physician for the Atlanta Braves since 1976 and a team cardiologist for Georgia Tech University since 1980. He is a member of the American Heart Association, the American College of Sports Medicine (Fellow), the American College of Cardiology (Fellow), the American College of Physicians (Master), and the American Board of Internal Medicine (Diplomat).
